Sally Davis 2020 Conductor

Sally Davis has recently returned from ten years living in Shanghai, where she was Head of Performing Arts at Yew Chung International School. In that time, she taught both classroom music and directed ensembles. Returning to Melbourne, she now teaches at Carey Baptist Grammar school where she enjoys working with Junior Wind Bands and the Symphony Orchestra. Sally often adjudicates at the VSMF, and in 2016 was the Chief Adjudicator for the Junior Bands section. Sally recently completed her Masters of International Education through the University of Melbourne and is involved in the IBO organisation through examining and curriculum development. Sally grew up in Geelong, and is pleased to be returning to the GSMC as a conductor this time, having participated in the camp as a student, too many years ago to mention!


It was through the International Baccalaureate curriculum that Sally began to consider ways of teaching classroom music that allowed students to explore the elements through a broad range of music. Sally is currently teaching at Carey Baptist Grammar, The University of Melbourne Graduate School of Education, in the Masters of International Education stream, and at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music.

Edward Fairlie 2020 Conductor

Edward Fairlie grew up in Geelong, Australia. Upon finishing high school at Christian College Geelong he moved to Melbourne where he earned a Bachelor of Music Performance (Improvisation) on trumpet from The Victorian College of the Arts. In 2012 he received his Bachelor of Music Performance Honours (Composition) from the University of Melbourne. As a performer, he has toured and recorded playing the trumpet, keyboard and singing with many prominent artists, including ARIA award-winning singer/ songwriter Julia Stone, and ARIA/ Grammy award-winning artist Gotye. He is an occasional fifth member of a cappella vocal jazz group The Idea of North, and performed with them on their 2015/16 “Ballads By Candlelight” tour, as well as appearing on a track which he co-arranged on their latest album, Ballads. Edward also played trumpet in the pit orchestra for the 2017/18 Melbourne production of Disney’s Aladdin. Other bands he currently performs with include 1960s inspired Bollywood group The Bombay Royale and indie rock group Canary. Known as a composer/arranger of great versatility, he writes music for wind band, big band, orchestra, choir, brass band and chamber ensemble, and across a wide variety of genres. Edward has three published works for wind ensemble - Storm and Urge and Nurture, both published in the “Windependence” series for Boosey and Hawkes, and Death By Tango, which was the winner of the 2012 Australian Band and Orchestra Directors’ Association Concert Band Competition Contest and is published by Brolga Music. Edward currently teaches trumpet and conducts jazz and wind ensembles at Eltham High School in Melbourne, and is a lecturer in the Interactive Composition stream at the University of Melbourne.

The Otway Strings will cater to players from approximately Grade One to Grade Four AMEB standard.

Martin DeMarte 2020 Conductor

Martin has been a dynamic music educator for over twenty years. After having worked in many exciting and innovative string programs in three countries and two Australian states, he has recently settled in Geelong. Martin has taught strings at all levels, and thus brings with him a wealth of experience in motivating and inspiring young students and ensembles. His passion for music and in particular String music education, contributes to his vast ability to communicate with, engage and lead ensembles to provide truly remarkable musical performances. Martin also has a particular passion for musical arrangement. The Police, Cee Lo Green and Toto are just a few of the artists that have provided material for several powerful string and orchestral arrangements. Martin currently teaches Strings at Christian College Geelong, Bellarine Campus. There he directs the Junior and Middle School String Ensembles, as well as the Ceilidh band. Martin has been an active violin, guitar and voice performer in myriad styles and genres of music. He regularly plays with Geelong Symphony Orchestra as well as playing guitar in the Motown tribute show, ‘Dancing in the Street’. In his spare time, Martin enjoys spending time with his family, cycling and cooking.

Paul Jones 2020 Conductor

Paul Jones has had a varied and extensive career in Music and Music Education. He has been a strong advocate for the promotion of quality music programs, which provide rewarding and exhilarating performance opportunities for young people. As a cellist, he has recorded for both 3MBS and ABC radio, both as a chamber player and soloist.  As a teacher, he has conducted award-winning orchestras at specialist music schools for 35 years. Paul was Instrumental Music Coordinator for the Melbourne Eastern Region for 5 years and was Director of Music at Balwyn High School for 11 years where he currently holds the positions of “Music Learning Specialist” and “Head of Strings”. Paul also has an interest in choral conducting – he has been the conductor of Balwyn High School Concert Choir on four overseas concert tours. This year, in April, he conducted the choir at the Chicago Youth Music Festival. He is currently the assistant chief assessor for VCE Music Performance and is in demand as both a guest conductor and adjudicator.

Djilang Singers

The Djilang Singers is a choir catering to all ages and experience levels.

​Jodie Townsend 2020 Conductor

Jodie is an experienced and enthusiastic music educator.  She has worked with students of all ages and has spent the last 23 years working at Geelong Grammar School.  In that time she has taught all year levels including VCE and IB.  Jodie studied the piano as her principle instrument and did her Honours year in Choral Conducting studying with Andrew Wailes.  She has had the privilege of working with many choirs and conducting some of the most wonderful repertoire.  Jodie has a special interest in the changing voice in both boys and girls and takes care to monitor all voices that she is working with.  She is very excited about conducting at this year Summer School and hopes she will see some familiar faces in the choir.
